“Hidden Gems” for Piano (2023)
1. Black Opal
2. Benitoite
3. Red Beryl
4. Painite
“Hidden Gems” slows the pacing down in this collection of works. This piece is a four-movement work that draws connections between rare gems and my music. Black Opal, Benitoite, Red Beryl, and Painite. I made these connections because there was a point where I kept my music hidden from people. This choice persisted for a while because I never felt that a piece of music I had written reflected the thoughts in my mind. I knew I had something to say with my music I just didn’t know how to say it at its fullest potential yet. Like a baby trying to utter words yet can’t articulate enough to convey what they want or mean. To a degree that is something I am still going through. I know how to articulate myself musically way more at this point in my life compared to 4 years ago, but I know I haven’t unlocked my true, full potential and that is what motivates me to keep composing. Always striving to make a piece that represents me at my best.
“Chrome Heart” for Bass Trombone & Piano (2023)
Chrome Heart was created during a time where I had many tribulations occur in close succession to one another. I found myself in scenarios where I couldn’t let those tribulations cloud my judgement or influence my quality of character for the greater good of what I needed to get done. I titled this piece Chrome Heart representing the overall character of me seeming “fine” to others to function in my environment while on the inside a whirlwind of thoughts and feelings were circulating about many different situations.
Simulation: T101 for Trombone & Electronics
Simulation: T101 is a trombone and electronic piece that I wrote my brother Dunwoody Mirvil. Simulation: T101 takes the audience on a journey through different futuristic environments that are explored by the trombonist. The environments are very different from each other and these differences are emphasized by the trombone’s melodic lines. In the middle of the piece the trombonist finds themself breaking out of the simulation briefly. Feeling a sense of peace and tranquility. However, that is short lived because the simulation reboots and the trombonist returns back into the simulation.
“Ramblings of the Unseen & Unheard” for Flute & Electronics (2023)
This piece is possibly the most abstract in the recital. Not only because it includes electronics but because of the use of various extended techniques in the flute. I wanted both the flute and electronics to work hand in hand. There are moments where the flute floats on top of the electronics and other moments where the effects and extended techniques of the flute make their way into the electronics. This piece expresses the loneliness and isolation I’ve felt in different times in my life. Times where I had to be distant or let go of people who were close to me. Certain times where I just had to sit with my thoughts whether good or bad and go through the motions of processing those thoughts. That’s why this piece is titled “Ramblings of the Unseen & Unheard” No one could hear or see what I was going through at times because I chose to be isolated, which left me stuck with the ramblings of those thoughts and emotions.
